Emerge Kentucky in the News

For the past seven months Michelle Williams honed her skills at public speaking, networking and campaigning with the goal to run for Covington City Commission.

FRANKFORT — Kentucky voters might not know the names Wanda Hammons or Brenda Mannino now, but they might someday.

They were among 24 women who graduated Saturday from Emerge Kentucky, a political leadership training program that aims to prepare Democratic women to run for public office.

When Emerge Kentucky launched its female candidate training program for Democratic women in 2009, the state was ranked 45th in the nation for women in politics and just 15% of the members in the state legislature were women.  On Saturday Emerge Kentucky graduated its second class of 24 women and encourages them to run for public office within five years.

Emerge Kentucky is an affiliate of Emerge America that operates candidate training programs in nine states. Including all of the graduates from this year’s classes, the Emerge organizations will have trained and graduated over 900 women since it was founded in 2002.  Emerge America president Karen Middleton attended the final training session and graduation and told the women “you are part of a movement to change the face of politics in America.”

Emerge Kentucky, a non-profit organization established in 2009 to recruit and train Democratic women to run for public office, announces two new members to the Board of Directors of Emerge Kentucky.  Mary Ellen Wiederwohl of Louisville, Assistant Director of Government Relations with MMLK Government Solutions in Frankfort, joined the board last fall.   A more recent addition, Peggy Kennedy of Ryland Heights in Northern Kentucky, serves as a marketer and speaker for Kenton Corporation.  The Emerge Kentucky Board of Directors includes 14 women from across Kentucky.
